The 2011 UN General Assembly resolution on women’s political participation stresses its critical importance in all contexts. The resolution calls on UN Member States to take a variety of measures to increase women’s political participation, including to encourage political parties to remove barriers that discriminate against the participation of women, to promote awareness of the importance of women’s political participation at all levels, and to investigate allegations of violence, assault, or harassment of women elected officials and candidates for political office.
