Dutt is committed to demonstrating how all of us, including and especially men, have a role to play in ending gender-based discrimination and violence. She approaches this work from a deeply humanist form of spirituality focusing on compassion, empathy and bridging connections.

In 2000, she founded global human rights organization Breakthrough, which aims to build a world in which violence against women and girls is unacceptable and all beings can thrive. Under her leadership, Breakthrough’s multimedia campaigns, community mobilization, agenda-setting, and leadership training equip men and women worldwide to challenge the status quo and take bold action for the dignity, equality, and justice of all.

Prior to founding Breakthrough, Dutt served as Program Officer for Human Rights and Social Justice at the Ford Foundation’s New Delhi Office and acted as Associate Director of the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at Rutgers University, an institution that was at the forefront of the global movement demanding recognition for women’s rights as human rights. She is also a co-founder of Sakhi for South Asian Women. Mallika is a 2016 recipient of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship.

Mallika currently serves on the boards of Peace is Loud and NEO Philanthropy and is a member of New York City’s Commission on Gender Equity. Mallika is also a member of the Social Media Council of the World Economic Forum and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mallika began her career as an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton. A graduate of NYU Law School, and Columbia University’s School of International Affairs, Mallika is also the recipient of an honorary doctorate from her undergraduate college, Mt. Holyoke.
