Why We Do It

Today too many people live and struggle in a world dominated by war and violence. For those of us far from the conflict zones, the narratives and images we absorb from the news and popular culture can limit our perceptions. War can seem inevitable; the bloodshed, overwhelming. We feel helpless in the face of history’s pull.

The clamor of war stories across screens, newspapers and airwaves perpetuates a great silence: the stories of ordinary people on the ground fighting for peace. Here in the U.S., our own country’s brutal role as a major exporter of war is too often submerged, muting our connection—and accountability—for conflicts abroad.

In the absence of narratives to counter these dominant frames, we forget what peace looks like, or sounds like. We can’t imagine the power of our own hand in promoting peace. Our belief in its very possibility is endangered—unless we see through new eyes, and amplify the voices of peacebuilding against the pitch of war.

The most powerful and lasting way to counter war and violence is to build a culture of peace. Peace is more than the absence of war. Peace means living together with, and even celebrating, our differences—be they cultural, religious, ethnic, racial or gender-based. Peace involves transforming society from the inside out, in our own lives and across borders. A culture of peace rests on a strong foundation of respect for justice, dignity and human rights.
